Whether they’re cutting, topical or just plain funny, there’s nothing better than a well-timed football chant spreading across the terrace to make a supporter’s spine tingle. It’s one of the purest joys of the beautiful game. But where do these melodic sing-alongs stem from, what makes a good one and what does it feel like to hear the whole end chiming a ditty you created? Where Ancelotti ranks with every Premier League boss for trophies won REPLY 3 3 REVEALED Oxlade-Chamberlain suffers another setback as Klopp confirms serious injury Arsenal fans in full voice ahead of a game against Chelsea Every time Ally McCoist lost it on air in 2019, including funny XI reactions What most football people really want to know is where chants come from, who starts them and how do they know they’re gonna fly.“When I first started going the game you had no idea where these outbursts came from,” agrees John. “The ether? Some terrace muse, maybe? But most likely they were concocted in the pubs around the ground, perhaps inspired by a new song seen on Top of the Pops a few days earlier. Quite often, though, songs miraculously and spontaneously appeared in response to an event on the pitch: unusual but magical moments of wit and creativity that can often cause 50,000 to burst out laughing in unison.”So how do you know when you’re onto a winner? “You just know,” reckons John. “There’s no blueprint or recipe. When it happens, you just know you’ve got a good one. You can’t wait to try it out on people knowing full well they’ll like it. The best way is to hone it, making it lean and unforgettable. Try it on a coach journey at an away game. The approval of your peers strengthens your belief in the idea. It is now ready to be unleashed. The temptation these days is to immediately post it on social media where it’ll be appropriated and twisted out of shape and reposted within minutes. You’ll have lost the essence of the original and end up disowning it, hoping no-one takes it up at the match.” Like this article? Son ban confirmed as Tottenham fail with appeal to overturn red card Forbes list reveals how much Mayweather, Ronaldo and Messi earned this decade “The ingredients of a top-drawer football chant are like the ingredients of a brilliant pop song,” says Liverpool supporter John Mackin. “And by that I mean no-one really knows. If there was a recipe they’d be everywhere. This is why you hear the same tired half-dozen chants bellowed by fans at most matches. I mean, is “Is this a library?” or “Shall we sing a song for you?” the epitome of terrace wit these days?”John has sat on The Kop for over 40 years, runs LFC forum The Rattle and is something of an authority on the subject. “A top-drawer chant or song is like ‘Penny Lane’”, he continues. “Yes it’s got a verse-chorus-verse, catchy melody etc. but then so many pop songs aspire to this and come nowhere close. The moment you hear it you know it’s perfect. They are moments of creative zeitgeist when the only time that chant could ever have appeared in that form was just then, when it did. And everyone who witnessed it knew it.” REVEALED Liverpool fans hold banners, scarves and flags on the Kop prior to a clash with neighbours Everton 3 So are you ready to try out one of your efforts on the next away day or in the local boozer? When you strike gold and a whole terrace is singing your chant, John Mackin says there’s nothing quite like it.“It’s a heart-warming moment of intense pride,” he says. “I concocted one simple name chant for Liverpool’s Israeli international Ronnie Rosenthal whilst standing on the old Clock End at Highbury during a midweek League Cup game. I was wracking my brain to recall a tune—anything that might be appropriate. I wanted something suitable for Ronny, but didn’t want to repeat a tired old ‘There’s only one …” version.“Eventually I dredged up the only Jewish tune I knew, Hava Naglia which I knew from the soundtrack to Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Ronnie’s name fitted perfectly – a marriage of tune and name and identity that worked like a dream. It soon became a staple on The Kop and having the entire terrace singing it loud whilst dancing a mock 20,000 strong Bar Mitzvah after Ronnie scored a late winner against Everton was unbelievable.” Liverpool fans in full voice ADVICE Ronaldo warned Lukaku how hard scoring goals in Serie A would be before Inter move Most Read In Football RANKED Which teams do the best on Boxing Day in the Premier League era? huge blow no dice Berahino hits back at b******t Johnson criticism – ‘I was in a dark place at Stoke’ BEST OF Premier League Team of the Season so far, including Liverpool and Leicester stars shining Top nine Premier League free transfers of the decade MONEY

NCP leader Dhananjay Munde on Thursday said that the imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra has led to temporary shutting down of the Chief Minister’s medical assistance cell, depriving thousands of patients of financial aid. Drawing Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s attention to the issue, Mr. Munde sought his intervention. He also wrote a letter to the governor in this connection. The President’s rule was imposed in Maharashtra on Tuesday as no party or alliance conveyed adequate numbers to stake claim to form government.“The Chief Minister’s medical assistance cell has been closed down as the President’s rule has been imposed in the state. Therefore, thousands of patients have been deprived of medical help. Requesting Honourable Governor @BSKoshyari to take note and give instruction to help patients,” Mr. Munde tweeted in Marathi. Meanwhile, a BJP leader and president of Thane-based ’Alert Citizens Forum of India’, Dayanand Nene, said the Governor should appoint an officer on special duty to handle emergency financial aid from the cell for the convenience of patients.
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has been included in Serbian team for the tie.The world’s best tennis players are not usually seen in India, much less so when they are in the prime of their careers. But Novak Djokovic will break the norm when he arrives for Serbia’s Davis Cup World Group play-off tie against India in Bangalore on September 12-14.Defeat in the tie would relegate them from World Group, and this must have prompted Serbia to field its biggest gun. India were already facing an uphill task even without World No. 1 Djokovic, but the task suddenly became infinitely stiffer.Apart from Djokovic, the other players in the Serbia squad are Dujan Lajovic (World No. 61), Filip Krajinovic (108) and doubles specialist Nenad Zimonjic (7), who has eight trophies on tennis’s biggest stage. In front of them will be Somdev Devvarman (World No. 143) and Yuki Bhambri (151), while the doubles match is likely to feature Rohan Bopanna (29) and Saketh Myneni (191). On paper, it has all the signs of a mismatch.Serbia, Davis Cup champions in 2010 and runners-up last year, come into the tie after losing 2-3 to Switzerland, who fielded Federer and Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic did not feature in that tie.India defeated South Korea 3-1 in Busan with Devvarman winning both his singles matches, and Bopanna and Myneni taking the doubles. However, Devvarman’s form has tailed off in recent months from the high of No. 62 more than three years ago. With Yuki also struggling to find his feet at the top level, India’s non-playing captain Anand Amritraj’s dream of a World Group spot could be dashed by the Serbian heavy artillery.advertisementIn the past, the doubles has often been a banker for India as the likes of the Amritraj brothers and later, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi kept the flag flying. But with Zimonjic, who has three men’s doubles and five mixed doubles titles at Grand Slams as well as two at the World Tour Finals, up against them, getting a point may be tough. The Serbians recorded a 4-1 victory over India at Novi Sad in 2011, which was also the last time Serbia competed in a World Group play-off tie. When Djokovic led from the front to take Serbia to Davis Cup glory four years ago, it was the start of an unbelievable winning spree. In 2011, he remained undefeated from the start of the season up until losing to Federer in the French Open semi-finals.
