Walmart: Haunted by the specter of union organizing

first_imgSecaucus, N.J., Nov 23.WW photo: G. DunkelSecaucus, N.J. — The capitalist 1% class is trembling at the specter of a union victory at Walmart, the largest multinational corporation in the world. On Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, shoppers did not just find cheap goods. They encountered some class truth. In more than 1,000 stores in 46 states, a multitude of actions took place. They included not just community and labor support but strike actions by many Walmart employees. This is historic and in some ways unprecedented. It could signal a turning point of struggle in the midst of a deep economic crisis. Workers here and abroad face an unparalleled assault and for the most part are on the defensive. But Walmart could be a sign that workers are going on the offensive. Here in Secaucus, N.J., several hundred community, labor and Occupy Wall Street activists gathered at the Walmart store. Several tactics were used, including mic checks inside the store, leafleting shoppers, pickets in front of the store and on the sidewalk for passersby to see, and the ever popular Rude Mechanical Orchestra, which marched up and down in front of the store playing union songs.Activists boldly gathered inside the store to chant and talk about the goals of OUR Walmart, before being brusquely escorted out by guards. Shoppers not only stopped to take cellphone pictures of the protests but listened to their message. The issues of low wages, cuts in benefits and lack of respect and dignity on the job had to resonate with them. After all, you don’t shop at Walmart if you are making a quarter of a million dollars a year.Certainly the owners of Walmart don’t need to shop there. The Walton family has accumulated as much wealth as the bottom 40 percent of the people in this country combined — a whopping $73 billion to $89 billion!New Jersey shoppers smiled as they took protesters’ pictures. So did some of the workers on the job. Outside, drivers honked their horns in support.Walmart attempted to dismiss the significance of the Friday actions. Yet the week before, the megacorporation had requested that the National Labor Relations Board issue an injunction against the protests — in flagrant violation of the right to organize and in step with their countless retaliatory measures against the workers. With each passing day, the possibility of organizing a union at Walmart becomes stronger. Workers in right-to-work states like Texas, Florida and Tennessee are joining workers in more liberal areas as they walk out and go on strike, many all alone.Great opportunity for class struggleU.S. workers are fed up. A flame has beenlit that could burst into fire worldwide.Secaucus, N.J., Nov 23.WW photo: G. DunkelWalmart workers had to contend with the threat that they would be fired if they participated in the strike. The common practice at Walmart is that when workers complain about working conditions, bosses make their schedules chaotic, cut their hours or fire them. Yet many did strike on Black Friday. In California some participated in civil disobedience that brought arrests.Walmart is a megacorporation bigger than Exxon or Bank of America. It counts on retaliation, abuse and temping out work to maintain its low-wage work force. It counts on warehouse workers to distribute cheap goods imported from abroad. It’s the warehouse workers who opened this recent struggle and lit the union flame.Walmart is the largest employer of Black and Latino/a workers in this country, who experience brutal racism both on the job and in their communities. They are ripe for organizing. In 2011, Walmart was forced to settle a lawsuit brought by workers in California who had been called “f—-ing wetbacks” and were told that “Mexicans are only good for cleaning homes.” Even some with legal status were threatened with deportation. The Waltons give generously to anti-immigrant politicians and campaigns.A Black pharmacist who blew the whistle on Walmart for dumping expired drugs at a store in an impoverished Black community was fired. Several West African workers filed a lawsuit against Walmart after their bosses told them too many Africans worked in the Colorado store. But history is on the side of the Walmart workers. In the 1920s and 30s, companies like Walmart counted on threats and intimidation to deny workers their rights. Goons beat and intimidated workers, trying to break their struggles. But unions began to thrive and the government had to make concessions, like a national jobs program. The masses at that time organized for themselves in a genuine people’s assembly movement, providing food for the hungry and money for rent, much the way Occupy Sandy is doing today. The campaign at Walmart provides a great opportunity for class struggle. Let’s take it. nFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Staying Motivated: Get Some Extra Help

first_imgSupport is the key to transforming your body and your life. You have worked hard to achieve your fitness goals and all is well—but what now? How do you maintain it?Amanda Price-Salazar, a certified personal trainer and owner of Edge Fitness in Tumwater, says that often when people make huge body transformations though diet and exercise programs, they eventually end up going back to the same place they started due to lack of motivation to stay on track. How can you combat that cycle of regression? The secret is getting to the heart of the matter and looking at what contributed to your initial lack of fitness in the first place.“Any person who has struggled to achieve a body transformation goal of any kind, whether struggling to lose weight gained over a period of years or recovering from an accident and trying to get back your body back into shape, can use some help,” shares Price-Salazar. “Seeking counsel from a therapist or someone who specifically works with individuals on stress and anxiety management, body image and self-esteem issues, eating disorders and addiction management and recovery, can really help.”Amanda Price-Salazar, an Olympia personal trainer, battled back from a horrific motorcycle injury.Price-Salazar is speaking from personal experience. In August 2006, a motorcycle accident added a new dimension to Price-Salazar’s life. Almost losing her life and coming out of it with a broken back, hip, and pelvis, she was determined to recover and stay in shape. Working diligently with a physical therapist and mental well-being therapist for several years, she gradually regained her strength, surpassing her fitness level from before the accident.“You cannot do it alone. Your friends and family won’t always tell you the whole truth, trying to be sensitive to your feelings or they may not understand fully what you are going through,” she shares. “You need to find someone who is an ‘out-of-the-box’ thinker, who will listen and guide you positively and honestly along the way and who truly specializes in the areas you need.”She also hired a life coach. “I have accomplished more in the last seven years than I have throughout my entire life,” explains Price-Salazar, crediting her therapist and life coach. If you want to stay on track, remain motivated with your health and fitness goals, and ensure your continued success, invest in a mental health professional, coach or therapist.  This individual will help you address any underlying issues that might keep you from achieving your goals.“You can take care of your outside and constantly tell yourself you are just fine on the inside, but you will soon realize that until you get to heart of your issues, identify them, and face them head on, it will be difficult to see success in the future,” she explains.  “Once you can work through your issues and finally move past them, you will achieve greater things and see more changes than ever before, but you truly have to have someone to help you get through it.” Facebook29Tweet0Pin0last_img read more

Yahoo Grabs Associated to Increase Content

Yahoo, the second largest search engine after Google, said it will complete this acquisition in the third quarter of 2010. Although financial terms were not released by either company, the deal is thought to be worth in the area of $90–100 million. “Together, we’ll create more content around what we know our users care about, and open up new and creative avenues for advertisers to engage with consumers across our network,” Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said in the official news release. “Having insight into user intent through its leading search products enables Yahoo! to identify topics important to advertisers and users. Yahoo! plans to use Associated Content to create content around those topics and leverage Associated Content to contribute content to existing media properties.”Business Insider pointed out that Associated Content, backed in part by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, had considered AOL to be the most likely buyer, but they decided to launch the SEED “open content submission platform” instead. Competitors include AOL and Demand Media. Demand has been criticized for producing a large amount of arguably low-quality content and is thought to be preparing for an IPO. Associated Content also brings along the deals it has with publishers like Reuters, Turner, Scripps and Fox.center_img curt hopkins Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#AOL#user-generated content#web#Yahoo last_img read more

What To Get Your Sweetie for Valentines Day? How About iOS 4.3

first_imgTags:#Apple#web Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting According to rumors, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 4.3, will be released on February 14th. At 10 a.m. PST to be precise. Unlike the cheap box of chocolates that leaves you guessing whether the next bite brings nougat or that strawberry cream filling, we’ve already figured out much of what we can expect for iOS 4.3. So, if you find yourself pining and alone on everyone’s favorite holiday, just remember that you have a date…with iOS 4.3. According to Apple-centric blog MacStories, current beta versions of iOS 4.3 will include AirPlay, bug fixes and code maintenance, as well as a series of APIs to bring subscriptions to apps.ReadWriteWeb’s Sarah Perez looked at the features expected for the next version of iOS and came up with this list: Wi-Fi Hotspot: As we already knew, the personal hotspot capabilities are present for GSM devices, although it’s up to individual carriers to implement this setting. It’s doubtful that AT&T will be one of them. Verizon, however, is. AirPlay support for third-party native and Web applications: Previously in iOS 4.2, AirPlay, the feature that lets you stream video from your mobile device to an Apple TV or other third-party AirPlay-enabled hardware, was only available to the built-in Apple apps. With 4.3, any third party app can offer this functionality, too. A redesigned FaceTime icon: A minor change, but it looks good. Support for fullscreen iAd banners on iPad: A new iAd format which Apple says is “easy to implement,” allows its users to collect 60% of the revenue generated. Configurable switch for the iPad, as mentioned above, the toggle can be used as a mute button or orientation lock HTTP Live Streaming Statistics: This allows developers to track their video streams’ popularity and measure their performance. MobileCrunch warns not to pin all of your hopes and dreams on an iOS 4.3 release on February 14th exactly, but says that “just about all of the rumors pin the launch sometimes around the middle of February.” The real question, however, is how long until iOS 4.3 is jailbroken? 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts mike melansonlast_img read more

How to Frame a Wide Shot Like a Master Cinematographer

first_imgLearn how to frame a Wide Shot the Robert Richardson way. Break down the work of an eight-time Oscar nominee by learning the difference between a Wide Shot and Extreme Wide Shot.Top Image via The Weinstein CompanyRobert Richardson is one of the winningest cinematographers in Academy Awards history, having won three cinematography Oscars for JFK, The Aviator, and Hugo. He has had several long time collaborations with directors like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Oliver Stone. The wide shot is one of the standard camera angles used to frame a character. In this breakdown, we examine Richardson’s various uses of the wide shot in the films he lensed.Wide Shot (AKA: Long Shot, Full Shot)Image: Django Unchained Wide Shot via The Weinstein Company and Columbia PicturesThe wide shot frames a character from head to toe. It is also referred to as a long shot or a full shot. These shots are used to show the audience the context and space of a scene. They should feature scale, distance, and location. The image above is one of the many great examples of a wide shot from Django Unchained. It prominently features Django from head to toe, while establishing him as the hero of the film. Make note of the background, and how perfectly balanced the shot it.Django stands tall in the center of the frame. Behind him is a magnificent and massive tree. By adding the three women on the left, they fill in the dead space while adding depth to the shot. The same goes for the men and wagon on the right side. Also, notice how the tree leaves all perfectly train your eyes on Django as they sweep to the left. I absolutely love this shot. Image: The Aviator Wide Shot via Miramax and Warner Bros. The wide shot does not always have to prominently feature a character, they can also be used to show objects like this airplane from The Aviator. We are given the scale of the plane and the location, we are up in the sky. There is still depth in the shot, as we see a second plane flying in the rear during the dogfight sequence.Image: Kill Bill: Vol. 1 Wide Shot via MiramaxRichardson is also a master with silhouettes, often using them as wide shots throughout his films. In the above wonderful image from Kill Bill: Vol. 1, we are transported to this amazing room during the fight scene with the Crazy 88s. This, and the training montage in Kill Bill: Vol. 2, are absolutely stunning. The characters all stand against a brightly lit background, which draws all your attention to their movements. The goal is to feature the martial arts. By taking away characters faces an costumes, you are intently focused on the action. The result is a stunning look which went on to define the franchise.Image: Kill Bill: Vol. 2 Wide Shot via MiramaxRichardson also uses silhouettes to showcase secrecy, like in this below shot from Shutter Island. Notice how ominous the entire scene feels. We can’t see either character’s face. They are also perfectly centered between two columns and surrounded by a chainlink fence. This is a great way to create tension with the audience. This wide shot just makes you uncomfortable.Image: Shutter Island Wide Shot via Paramount Pictures. In this final wide shot from Hugo, take a look at how much is going on. There is an absolutely incredible amount of detail surrounding Georges Méliès, but with the center framing and the stage light draws all attention to him. Take note of the massive amount of props and characters in frame. There are four stage lights on either side of his feet, as well as two lights in the balcony framing his shoulders. There are two statues in the background, both backlit. Then there is the massive audience there for the show. All that detail, yet you are still focused on Méliès. That’s how powerful a wide shot can be with the right framing and lighting. Image: Hugo Wide Shot via Paramount PicturesExtreme Wide Shot (Extreme Long Shot)Image: Inglourious Basterds Extreme Wide shot via The Weinstein Company and Universal PicturesThe extreme wide shot is a shot taken from a long distance. This shot is often also used as an establishing shot. It typically features landscapes or massive building exteriors. An extreme wide shot showcases the surroundings of a character. Like the wide shot, it prominently features scale, distance, and location. If the character is visible in the shot, they are often minuscule in size. They are not the focus of the shot, yet they are there to complement it. In the above image from Inglourious Basterds, we are shown the entire home property. This plays into the story, as it shows that there is really nowhere to hide. The shot also uses cows and laundry to fill in the dead space by the trees. It helps balance out the house on the left hand side of the frame. In the below image from Django Unchained, we are shown the standard extreme wide shot of westerns. The vast open landscape shows how far they have to travel, and the mountains represent the obstacles ahead.Image: Django Unchained Extreme Wide Shot via The Weinstein Company and Columbia PicturesWide Shots: Split the DifferenceNow that you know the standard rules, you should know that you can also break them. You can frame shots that are in between a standard wide shot and standard extreme wide shot. The best part of cinematography is using your surrounding to capture the best possible shot.In this final image from Hugo, we see a young Hugo standing center frame, but he is overpowered in the frame by the tunnel. He is lit from behind, and we can barely make out his face. A perfect example of splitting the difference between wide and extreme wide.Image: Hugo Wide Shot via Paramount PicturesInterested in more breakdowns like these?
