A critical voice on biosafety

first_imgMarc Lipsitch, professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, has become a leading critic of experiments creating dangerous flu strains that are transmissible between mammals. Earlier this year, he co-authored an editorial calling for greater scrutiny of these so-called “gain-of- function” experiments, and for future studies on flu transmission to use safer and more effective alternative approaches.“Just learning good science is not a justification for putting life and health at risk,” Lipsitch said in a September 8, 2014 BBC World Service Discovery podcast.A Science magazine profile, published in the September 5, 2014 issue, observed that Lipsitch’s warnings about the risk of accidents at labs working with dangerous pathogens were prescient given this summer’s biosafety incidents at the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Transmission. The article quotes longtime friend and collaborator Lone Simonsen, who calls Lipsitch “one of the bravest scientists I know.” He added that if Lipsitch “feels strongly about an issue he will pursue and talk about it, even though it is a point of view most of his sympathetic colleagues share but would not discuss aloud.” Read Full Storylast_img read more

Tyler Skaggs grew up dedicated to family, always a team player

first_imgLos Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs was known for his humility, love of family and for being a team player growing up in Southern California.Skaggs was found dead at the age of 27 in a Hilton hotel Monday in Southlake, Texas, on a trip to play the Texas Rangers. While there’s been an outpouring of emotion at the loss across Major League Baseball and among fans who have built a memorial at Angel Stadium, those who knew Skaggs at Santa Monica High are also grieving. At the school on Tuesday, Doug Kim was telling girls basketball players that Skaggs was the kind of person they should aspire to become.Kim coached him on the JV basketball team and remembers details about the way he carried himself in high school. Skaggs led the Santa Monica team in strikeouts with 76 during his senior season when he was the team captain. Kim remembers Skaggs throwing a no-hitter that year while Tommy Lasorda was in the stands. He was also an outstanding basketball player, according to Kim, averaging a triple double on the team he coached, and if he had a weakness, he would work hard to improve it.“He could’ve been a D-1 quarterback … but his heart was always in baseball. I think he could’ve done anything he wanted to do. If he wanted to be a doctor, he would’ve been a doctor,” said Kim.Tyler and his wife Carli Miles were married in December, having met each other during high school. Wedding photographer Brandon Bibbins was a childhood friend of Carli’s and got to know Tyler through the months leading up to the wedding day.“Tyler was the nicest and most humble man, you would never know he was the high-profile athlete he is. Carried himself like a regular guy,” Bibbins said.Just hours before his death, Tyler posted to Instagram a photo of his teammates all donning cowboy hats next to a plane ahead of their trip to Texas.A scroll through his social media feed reveals a life devoted to his craft and his teammates, with a particular emphasis on Carli.“Cheers to many more years of happiness,” he wrote in a post on her birthday earlier this year.Kim was among many people grieving on Tuesday.“You can’t help but wonder, ‘Why him?’ I’m wondering why,” Kim said. “He was moving on to a point in his life when he was about to have a family. Now that’s gone. It’s a hard thing. He was such a great kid.”“His imprint is deep here.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img “He had a tremendous work ethic. He was always focused … I think he got a lot of that from his mom,” Kim said.Skaggs’ relationship with his mother was special. Debbie Skaggs is a longtime softball coach at Santa Monica High and coached the team while Tyler played on the school’s baseball team.“Debbie’s influence on who he was as a man was profound. She was a really good mom,” Park said. “He always had a smile on his face. He always tried to do the right thing. When push came to shove, he knew what was right. Kids wanted to be around him. They wanted to do the right thing when they were around him.”When his mom’s team won the CIF championship in softball after he had graduated. Tourism Minister Highlights Need for Increased Funding for Tourism

first_img Bolstered by her love for the outdoors, an innate passion for forests and a deep appreciation for the sector’s value to the environment, Ms. Headley has led the Department for 21 years, seeing it through many changes, most notably its transition to an executive agency in 2007. “Being a female in the Forestry Department had always been like ‘who are you and what do you know’,” Ms. Headley says in an interview with JIS News. Story Highlights In 1996, Marilyn Headley made history by becoming the first female Conservator of Forests in Jamaica and the Commonwealth. In 1996, Marilyn Headley made history by becoming the first female Conservator of Forests in Jamaica and the Commonwealth.“They used to say, you don’t look like a forester; so I would always say, how is a forester supposed to look?” she relates to JIS News. The appointment as head of the Forestry Department – all the more meaningful, as she was returning to the agency, which kick-started her career – would set the forest sector on its current path to being foremost in the country’s drive towards sustained growth and development. Her appointment might also have served as a catalyst for the addition of more female technical staff at the traditionally male-dominated Department.“Being a female in the Forestry Department had always been like ‘who are you and what do you know’,” Ms. Headley says in an interview with JIS News.Recalling her first stint at the Department in 1976, when she took a job as an Assistant to the then Deputy Director, having just completed her degree in Agriculture at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Ms. Headley says there were, at most, three females working in technical fields.Over the course of eight years, she served as civil culturist, research officer and senior research officer at the agency.Still, she was eager for more opportunities to grow professionally, and moved to the Jamaica National Investment Promotions Limited (now Jamaica Promotions Corporation), where she worked as an Agricultural Marketing Officer. That agency transferred her to its Miami office, where, for eight years, she would work as the Agricultural Officer for the North American region.Upon her return to the Forestry Department in 1996, however, she was disappointed to find that the female-to-male ratio had not seen much improvement over the years. The gender gap would, however, begin to improve, following Ms. Headley’s appointment as Conservator. This, she says, was due in part to a Canadian-funded ‘Trees for Tomorrow’ project, which had a module focused on how gender was reflected at the organisation. The Conservator makes it clear that while she made no direct effort to bring in more females, she made sure qualified women were equally considered for technical positions as men.“I am not going to hire you just because you are female, but if you are qualified, gender should not hinder you from being considered,” she points out. With the number of women leaving universities qualified in technical areas increasing, she is proud to note that the female cohort at the Forestry Department also increased exponentially.Ms. Headley tells JIS News that some 40 per cent of technical positions at the Department are now filled by women, up from 1.5 per cent in the 1990s. She notes that several members of the senior management team are also female.“That is what I call improvement, in that everybody can now feel like they too can be a Conservator. It is important for people to feel that when they come in, there is room for them to move up,” she points out.Bolstered by her love for the outdoors, an innate passion for forests and a deep appreciation for the sector’s value to the environment, Ms. Headley has led the Department for 21 years, seeing it through many changes, most notably its transition to an executive agency in 2007.She was appointed Chief Executive Officer and reinstated as Conservator of Forests following the shift, which she describes as an achievement of which she is particularly proud. She is also happy to have been able to bring the forest sector to the forefront of public awareness, which she hopes will foster greater recognition of the importance of forests in mitigating climate change, protecting the country’s infrastructure from flooding and to overall safeguard the environment. It was in the 2000s that she introduced the community participation initiative, where foresters were encouraged to get persons involved in protecting the resource. “Getting people involved, getting the stakeholders to meet, getting the views of the public – all this was new to the Forestry Department,” she points out.She adds that the expansion of the agency, to include posts for lawyers, sociologists, public-awareness specialists, and others, was also significant in revolutionising the way the Department operates.“This is very much in line with the global trend of how we must see forestry,” Ms. Headley says. She expresses confidence in the team at the Forestry Department and its capability to take the agency forward, especially through the implementation of the National Conservation Forest Management Plan, now before the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation for approval.“I think we are on a good track. We have here some bright young people… . I feel comfortable that this generation is ready to take the plan to 2026 and beyond,” she tells JIS News.Reflecting on her contribution to the public sector, she expresses satisfaction with her journey.“As a career civil servant, I find that I have been able to contribute in a lot of ways and to make a difference in the country and the sector,” she notes. She says her motto for success, inspired by a teacher from her youth, has been to always aim high.“Anything you are doing, always aim just a little beyond,” the CEO and Forest Conservator says.last_img read more

Was Tressel the ticket to high ticket sales

Ohio State football tickets are scheduled to go on sale for students today at 4 p.m., and some some say coach Jim Tressel’s resignation will change their buying plans. Tressel resigned on Monday after a scandalous offseason, and some students say it has affected their decision to buy tickets. “I’m disappointed that he’s leaving because I thought that Tressel was different from most coaches,” said Mark Rudolph, a first-year in biomedical science. “I bought tickets last year, but I’m not going to this coming year.” One student said she isn’t optimistic about the upcoming season. “It’s not going to be a great football season without him next year,” said Katy Wheeler, a fourth-year in accounting. “But then again, I know it really just comes down the players.” Others don’t think Tressel’s departure will hurt the program’s ticket sales. Tickets will be sold by students’ rank, which is determined by a student’s number of credit hours. Sales will run through June 15, with any unsold tickets going on sale to all ranks at 4 p.m. on June 16. “If I buy tickets next year, I’ll probably just sell them,” said Natalie Zeleznik, a first-year in math and physics. Students can purchase the student season ticket package, which includes tickets to the final five home games of the year. This package includes games versus Colorado, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana and Penn State, respectively. The cost for this package is $170, plus a $10 processing fee, according to OSU’s official website. Some students said Tressel’s resignation wouldn’t prevent them from attending the games. “Tressel is a great coach but no one is bigger than the program,” said Alan Irving, a fourth-year in psychology. “I bought tickets last year, and I’m getting tickets next year. OSU football is a tradition. It’s not just about Jim Tressel.” Students can also buy tickets to home games against Akron and Toledo, which cost $34 each, along with a $2 processing fee. Upgrading to the Block “O” section of the stadium costs an additional $5 per ticket package, as well as a $15 Block “O” membership fee. Students can buy tickets to away games, but must purchase the home game package to be eligible. The prices for away games range from $70 to $90. The only away game ticket to cost $90 gets students into the Big House in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Nov. 26, when the Buckeyes play Michigan for the first time in the post-Tressel era. Prior to Tressel’s tenure, the Buckeyes hadn’t beaten the Wolverines in Ann Arbor since 1987. “I got tickets last year, and I’ll come back for a couple next year,” said Matt Gant, a fourth-year in economics. “I expect anywhere from one to four losses next year.” Tressel won’t be the only familiar face not donning scarlet and gray at Ohio Stadium on Saturdays this fall. Five Buckeyes including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, offensive lineman Mike Adams, running back Dan Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas are suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling memorabilia and receiving improper benefits. Tressel was also to be suspended for the first five games of the season. Columbus’ NBC affiliate reported Tuesday that Pryor has been driving under a suspended license. Pryor arrived at a team meeting Monday night at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in a Nissan 350Z with temp tags on it. read more
