A miner was on Thursday shot and killed after he allegedly attacked a businessman with a cutlass at a mining camp in the Cuyuni River. The dead man has only been identified as “Leon”.Reports are the businessman visited a shop owned by a Brazilian on Thursday last but was forced to stay at that location since a fallen tree had blocked the road, preventing him from returning to his camp located at 1 ½ mile Bartica, Potaro.The businessman reportedly tied a hammock in the Brazilian man’s premises to spend the night when he heard loud noises emanating from outside. As a result, the Brazilian man went to check and saw the now dead man hitting a cutlass to the walls of his premises.According to reports, the Brazilian man attempted to take the cutlass away from “Leon” but instead, he was overpowered. The Bartica businessman intervened and was also attacked. Guyana Times understands that the Bartica businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder, drew his weapon and reportedly discharged a round in the air to scare “Leon” but the man continued making advances at him.The businessman discharged three rounds, two of which struck the now dead man. The Police were called to the scene and “Leon” was pronounced dead. The businessman was taken into Police custody and his weapon has since been lodged. On Tuesday, the police said that the businessman is assisting with the investigations.Meanwhile, a source close to the investigation told this publication that persons reported that the now dead man and the businessman were engaged in a heated argument.It was during this time that the man collected a cutlass and attacked the businessman who responded by shooting him twice, once the chest and once to the upper back. He collapsed and died.Police sources explained that after they received reports about the shooting, a team of investigators travelled to the area but due to the mountainous terrains, the body was only brought to Bartica on Monday. The businessman, the source explained is the son of a popular resort owner.
