Cities must be innovation sites: Manuel

first_img18 July 2013Cities should become sites of innovation for addressing challenges such as youth unemployment, spatial and income inequalities and economic exclusion, says National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel.Speaking at the Metropolis Annual Meeting in Sandton, Johannesburg on Wednesday, Manuel said city leaders, researchers and policymakers should create opportunities for experimentation with different models of delivering services, developing and maintaining infrastructure and creating jobs.Cities ‘must become inclusive’Unless leaders act swiftly, the patience of citizens who lived on the periphery would run out, he cautioned.“We need to urgently devise and implement credible plans to intervene and make our cities inclusive, and bring the majority of citizens of our cities into the mainstream,” Manuel said.“We need to equip our people with skills and education to take advantage of opportunities offered by the economies of the cities. We need to plan, design, and manage cities for people.”The four-day meeting, which started on Tuesday, has drawn mayors, officials and leaders from over 85 cities around the world to Johannesburg to discuss key issues around enhancing development and improving the lives of citizens within a long-term urban development context. While cities were designed for imagined affluent populations, the reality is that too many people wake up each day to shattered dreams of improvements in lifestyle, Manuel said, prompting the need to re-assess urban policies.Re-assessing urban policiesManuel said cities needed land use management systems that allowed for mixed uses so that poor people came to feel they had a right to the city; that captured appreciation of land value for the benefit of the public; and that promoted sustainable use of land.Manuel also proposed a review of the country’s building norms and standards to ensure that they were appropriate for the level of people’s incomes, as well as for efficient accommodation and movement of dense concentrations of people.“Rules that regulate building height, plot sizes and building material should reflect affordability levels while providing scope for improvement in the future and taking into account environmental considerations. Using any other criteria will perpetuate inequality and make informality permanent,” he told the meeting. The minister, who heads up South Africa’s National Planning Commission, also proposed the need for urban development policies that allowed cities to play an effective coordination role to stimulate their own social and economic dynamism.Effective coordination was necessary to maximise the value of the investment that individuals made in housing, that firms made in commercial property, and that the state made in social infrastructure and other public goods.South Africa also needed financial institutions that met the needs of the different populations of the country’s cities, he said.“We need both primary and secondary mortgage markets that target currently underserved segments of the population. Whilst we appreciate the difficulty of developing criteria for affordability, we must do so to avoid the complete bifurcation into either formal high-end mortgages or state provision.”Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

Amazon Prime Stalks Netflix, Hulu With Zombieland Pilot

Between Netflix and Hulu Plus, consumers are treated to a variety of original programming financed and produced not by mega studios but by digital content companies that have little interest of seeding their content to cable channels. Netflix’s House of Cards has been a critical success and Hulu has some sleeper hits like Battleground. With the investment in original content from its top competitors, Amazon will not be left behind.Amazon today announced that it is picking up the pilot to Zombieland, a television series adaption from the movie staring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg. The move to pick up Zombieland is part of a larger original content play from Amazon as the company has promised to produce 13 series from a variety of pilots. Amazon is specifically focusing on comedy and children’s programming for its original content.Zombieland and other pilots from Amazon will be featured on its Prime Instant Video streaming service. Amazon will pick the 13 series from its array of pilots based on user feedback. The Zombieland series will be produced by the movie’s original creative team including writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The roles occupied by the likes of Harrelson and Stone have been recast to Kirk Ward and Maiara Walsh, respectively.Zombies are all the rage right now. The Walking Dead is killing it on cable. The adaptation of Max Brook’s novel World War Z is coming to the big screen in June with Brad Pitt.Content Marketing At Its BestPeople started scratching their heads a few years ago when companies like Netflix and Hulu started bidding on original series from prominent production companies. Why would Netflix spend millions of dollars to obtain House of Cards? Or make one final season of Arrested Development? This was not the business model we had come to expect from these companies. Netflix traditionally licensed content from the archives of major studios for its streaming service, not created its own. As the original programming has come to the screen, the play has made a lot more sense. House of Cards has a lot of people talking and the only way to see it is to have a Netflix streaming account. Users will have to get a Amazon Prime account to see the likes of Zombieland. Essentially, these original programs are giant marketing ploys. When it comes down to it, the point of marketing is to get people talking about your product. When people talk about your product, there is a chance they will actually spend money to use it. House of Cards certainly has people talking. If Zombieland the series is as good as Zombieland the movie, Amazon could see an uptick in Prime customers.HBO has been doing this for years, from Oz to the Sopranos to Game Of Thrones. The difference now is that you do not need a cable subscription to get great exclusive programming.Great For Cord CuttersFor consumers, the original content wars are the best thing to happen to television since the cable wars erupted in the 1980s. For the first time, television watchers are able to get true a la carte viewing options, choosing from here or there for what they want to watch as opposed to choosing various “bundles” of channels from the cable companies. Consumers that want to rid themselves of the monthly cable bill will have plenty of content to choose from and not just the shows that aired years before. In the end, everybody wins (except for, maybe, the cable companies). Lead image courtesy Shutterstock.last_img read more

Blaming External Factors for Your Results

first_imgIf you look for reasons you can’t do something, your mind will look for evidence to confirm what you want to believe. The question you need to ask yourself is, “Why do you want to believe external forces are preventing you from achieving some outcome or goal?” The answer can be challenging to accept, even though it is true. You look for external factors to explain why you are not responsible for failing to achieve something (or worse, as a reason not to try). Your mind works very hard to protect your ego, keeping it intact, regardless of how detrimental its strategies can be to your overall success. It will absolve you of your responsibility if you let it.External factors are beyond your control. Since there is nothing you can do about those factors, you can’t possibly be responsible, can you? So you look at politics, foreign affairs, the economy, the President, the Congress, events from your childhood, your lack of education, your age, your parents, your company, your leadership, your lack of training, your manager, your competitors, your clients, your lack of time, and an inexhaustible list of things that are beyond your control—and mostly beyond your influence.Denying the EvidenceSalespeople often believe and suggest that they lose deals because their price is too high when compared to their competitors. The external factors include their company’s pricing and their competitor’s willingness to sell something similar at a lower price. When presented with empirical and unassailable evidence to the contrary, namely a list of salespeople who are succeeding with the same pricing and the same competitors, they suggest those reps are lucky (a factor outside their control) or their territory is different (another factor outside of their control).I have heard sales leaders suggest that it is impossible to hire good salespeople, that they don’t exist. The most popular external factor that they point to as the cause is generational differences (i.e., Millennials, Generation Z, etc.). Even though they are sometimes correct about activity levels that are too low, and some salespeople employ ineffective approaches, neither are universally true across their sales force. It’s easier to blame the sales force than to lead and manage them, building a culture of accountability. There is little chance of producing better results while believing you can’t impact the performance of the people in your charge. The evidence is when a salesperson that fails for you goes on to succeed working for someone else. The Case for Believing Everything is Your FaultThere is a case for believing everything is your fault. That case does not include refusing to acknowledge the external factors, but instead to recognize them and respond to them appropriately. Even though you lack the power or influence to change the external factors, you have the power to determine how you react to them. The approach of believing that external factors beyond your control dictate your results eliminates your agency, disempowers you, and positions you as a victim. You might recognize this as blaming someone or something else as the root cause of your challenges. That posture can create a downward spiral (or vicious circle). Instead of working to improve your results by controlling your response, you give up and get carried away in the “The Drift.“By believing everything is your fault, you exercise your agency, empower yourself to act, and position yourself as the protagonist. You are not the victim. Instead, you are working on the things you can control or influence, and in doing so, creating a different outcome. If you must err on one side or the other, you are better off holding beliefs that allow you to act to improve things rather than those that would have to sit idly by, come what may. What It’s NotIt is not your price that causes you to lose deals to lower-priced competitors; it is your ability to convey the greater value and the better outcomes in which you are asking them to invest. The most substantial variable is how you sell and the experience you create for your prospective client. It isn’t true that there are not good salespeople available for work, nor is it true that the generational differences are so vast as to prevent any young person from being a successful salesperson. Instead, it’s what you do with the people you hire that has the most significant impact on your results. Two ListsIf you want control, start by making two lists. On the first list, write down all the external factors that might have some impact on your results. Label that list, “Things Outside of My Control.” Make a second list of what you can do to improve your results—in spite of the external factors. Label this list, “My Action Plan for Turning Things Around.”Any time you want to look at the external factors, also look at the list of things you can do and take action on what appears on that list. The more work you do on the second list, the less the first list will matter, as the first list isn’t actionable and the second is.You never have to wait for someone to empower you. You can empower yourself to act as soon as you decide to do so. Essential Reading! NBA in India: Indiana Pacers vs Sacramento Kings Match Tickets Sold Out

first_imgMumbai: In a bid to increase the popularity of basketball in India, for the first time two NBA teams — Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings, will face-off at the NSCI Dome here on Friday and it seems the initiative has already gained the first break as the entire tickets have been sold out.The two-day contest has been actually the driving force by Sacramento Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadive, who wants a cricket crazy India to recognize basketball. Speaking on the eve of the match, Ranadive said: “I am very excited as I am a Mumbaikar and returning back to a city were I took birth is matter of great happiness. Organising such a great event in hometown and my country is really very special moment for me.””The contest has a long story behind and I believe in next 10 years we will produce great talents from India who will feature in the NBA. I also feel basketball will be the next most popular sport in India,” he added.”Definitely, cricket is the most popular game in India but I believe basketball will also gain popularity here as it could be played both indoors and outdoors and even in the urban and rural areas. I am confident basketball will become a popular sporting discipline in India,” he expressed.Prior to their new season, the NBA teams compete in pre-season contests and try to figure out their strengths and weaknesses.Meanwhile, Kings’ star player Buddy Hield said: “We will try to play our natural game and will look to rectify our mistakes before the 2019-20 season. It is just a pre-season game but we will have to get better with time.”Kings had a decent run in the last edition of the game but failed to make to the play-offs. However, Hield is confident that his team will surely make to the play-offs. “Me and my team both want to be in the play-offs this season. We fumbled in the play-offs last season but this time we aim to enter the play-offs without committing any mistakes. After looking at my team, I feel we can make it.”Significantly, Reliance has also been a major force behind bringing a major basketball event in India. Both NBA and Reliance Foundation have invited around 3,000 students from over 70 schools to witness the game in Mumbai. Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak. Govt makes first contact with Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti

first_imgNew Delhi: The Centre has reached out to two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah of National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, raising the possibility of re-opening some space for political dialogue in the Valley.Omar and Mehbooba have been under detention ever since August 4, a day before the government announced revocation of J&K’s special status and its bifurcation into two Union Territories. While Omar is currently at Hari Niwas Palace, Mehbooba is at the Chashme Shahi in Srinagar. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details According to highly placed sources, who did not wish to be identified, some officials from investigating agencies were in communication with the leaders of the two mainstream Valley parties. “The political lockdown cannot continue forever. There has been some movement to sound out the two leaders for possible easing of restrictions on them. There is need to create space,” a source familiar with the developments told The Indian Express. The sources said while panchayat elections held last year were seen as a “success”, it will be a while for the panch and sarpanch to build any sizeable political base. “That’s a few years away. Right now, we need leaders to spread the right message,” another source said. What worries the government, however, is the tone of the political narrative and the message that Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti may carry to the people of the Valley once restrictions are eased. “Hence, there is considerable caution. The government is trying to speak with them, but it may be a while before they are fully released,” the source said.(With inputs from Indian Express)last_img read more
