Beavers: Natural Engineers Do It Better

first_imgA curious case of biomimetics was reported by Science Daily: engineers imitating beavers.  River restoration is a big project in many states that would like to return their rivers to the way the colonists first found them.  “When engineers restore rivers,” the article began, “one Kansas State University professor hopes they’ll keep a smaller engineer in mind: the North American beaver.”    Human engineers have been thinking too logically.  They tended to believe that river restoration meant making a continuous flowing stream.  They tore down milldams and felt satisfied when the river ran without breaks, but now realize they were missing something that beavers knew all along: river health requires ponds and multiple channels to increase diversity and productivity.Rather than tear down the whole milldam and radically change the surrounding ecosystem, the researchers recommend river restorers only remove part of it.  This allows some ponded water to remain and mimics the role of beavers.  Daniels said that in many cases if an old dam breaks and forms a gap, beavers may build their own dam to patch the gap and recreate the ecosystem that previously existed. This is not only a more natural approach to ecological engineering; it is a thrifty one.  Melinda Daniels, co-author of a study published by Kansas State, said, “We can restore rivers in a way that mimics the naturally diverse beaver streams, and we can save a lot of money in the process.”Why not just leave it to beaver?  (Sorry, but you knew it was coming.)For previous articles on beavers’ engineering benefits for the environment, see 10/11/2008, 02/25/2008, 06/08/2006, and 07/16/2005.(Visited 15 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Defeating Your Confirmation Bias

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now We seek information that confirms our existing beliefs while avoiding information that conflicts with what we believe to be true. This confirmation bias is a governor on your growth as well as your ability to take another person’s perspective, a good part of what makes up emotional intelligence, or empathy. Most of the time we don’t recognize that we eliminate the ideas and beliefs that make us uncomfortable, stunting our growth and making us less effective than we might be otherwise. One of the benefits of law school is that you must prepare to argue both sides of a case. You are taught to look at the issue from both sides, taking the opposing view into account. This is a good starting point for overcoming your confirmation bias.Let’s say you have some affinity for a particular political belief. You spend time on Facebook arguing with other people with conflicting views (sadly, and mostly to your detriment, as no minds are changed – surely not your own). You scour the Internet seeking information that confirms you are correct and allows you to prove the other person’s opinion is incorrect. Getting past your confirmation bias would begin with understanding why someone else believes what they believe and what truth is contained in their viewpoint . Instead of looking at only what confirms your view, you would look at what conflicts with it to gain a greater understanding and greater knowledge.Maybe you believe the old prospecting methods are dead, that no one should pick up the phone and interrupt another human being at work, and that sales should only begin with inbound marketing, where a prospect expresses the desire to have you help them do something different. So, you search the internet for evidence that you are right, that you shouldn’t have to dial the phone, and that your leads should come to you ready to buy. This may be what you want to be true because it would make selling easier. Defeating your confirmation bias would require that you explore other objective facts, subjective experiences, and opinions that might, like the example of political beliefs, expose you to some truth that might benefit you by deepening your understanding. When another belief or opinion or objective piece of data causes you to feel uncomfortable because it conflicts with what you believe, that information is worth exploring. The more uncomfortable something makes you, the greater opportunity there is for growth, development, and understanding other people’s perspectives. What if what you know is only a partial truth? What if there are other partial truths that might provide you with a greater perspective?last_img read more

first_imgSolskjaer excited to lead Man Utd at Old Trafford for first timeby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits it will be a special moment when he leads the team against Huddersfield at Old Trafford tomorrow.Solskjaer’s managerial stint is off to a fabulous start with the 5-1 victory at Cardiff City last weekend. He said, “Of course, you try to keep your emotions in check. I’m there to do a job, I’ve got to be focused. It’s not easy, I don’t think it will be easy but I’m looking forward to it. I think the boys are looking forward to playing at Old Trafford. That’s the key. We should be looking forward to playing there. I was sat next to Rene Meulensteen as a coach in a Reserves-team game there once, and I was there with Cardiff, but, of course, it will be special.”You can never set the bar too high. They [the players] are setting the standards. The players that play for this club, they’ve got high standards to live up to and, Saturday, it was not like they’ve outperformed themselves because you cannot outperform yourself. We want to look at this game, evaluate and look at a few clips. We can be better, we can understand each other better, so it will be good.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

North Korea convenes top-level meeting over ‘tense situation’

first_imgSeoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called a full meeting Wednesday of a top committee of the ruling Workers’ Party to address what he described as the “prevailing tense situation”, state media reported. The gathering of the Central Committee comes after Kim’s Hanoi summit with US President Donald Trump broke up without agreement in February, and as South Korean President Moon Jae-in flies to Washington for talks with the US leader. But the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) appeared to indicate that Kim may be focussing on Pyongyang’s continued push to develop its economy. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USIn a meeting with senior officials Tuesday, Kim ordered them to display “an attitude befitting the masters of the revolution and construction under the prevailing tense situation and thus follow through on the new strategic line of the Party”, KCNA reported. Last April Kim declared that the ruling party’s “new strategic line” would be “socialist economic construction” and its quest for nuclear development was complete. Kim made “a deep analysis of the matters pending urgent solution in the party and state”, KCNA said, adding that at Wednesday’s meeting the central committee will “decide the new orientation and ways of struggle in line with the need of the prevailing revolutionary situation”. Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at the Sejong Institute, said it would be difficult for Kim to lay out a new policy direction while Trump continues to express a willingness to maintain dialogue. Instead Wednesday’s meeting could involve a reshuffle of party officials including Kim Yong Chol, the North’s top envoy for talks with the US, who has been “blamed the most for the failure of the Hanoi summit”, he said. “It would signal a green light if he is replaced with a more flexible and practical figure, but if he stays, denuclearisation talks won’t be easy,” Cheong said. Trump and Kim held their first landmark summit in Singapore last June, where the North Korean leader signed a vaguely-worded deal on the “denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”.last_img read more
